Backyard Beauty Secrets

A supplement to the GardenScapes column in the August/September 03 issue of Decatur Magazine.

Plants and their uses:

Basil — stimulating bath herb; improves concentration
Borage — good for dry, sensitive skin when used in a facial steam
Chamomile — lightly astringent herb; soothes and softens skin; highlights blond hair when used as an infusion rinse
Cucumber — cleansing agent and toner
Lavender — healing, gentle cleanser; relieves tension; stimulates; adds fragrance; good for all skin types
Marjoram — relieves fatigue; makes an aromatic bath
Parsley — excellent conditioner for dry and sensitive skin
Peppermint — energizing astringent; clears complexion and sinuses
Rose — gentle cleanser; refines and softens skin
Rosemary — invigorating herb; boosts circulation; good for oily skin; shines dark hair when used as an infusion rinse
Sage — stimulates; tightens pores; relieves aching muscles
Thyme — eases stuffy noses; gentle antiseptic; good for blisters
Violet — soothing astringent; good for sensitive skin
Yarrow — healing astringent; good for oily skin
